Standardize the quantities
Ask each quote to identify measured or assumed area, thickness or section assumptions, demolition or excavation quantities and restoration boundaries. Differences should be visible, not buried in total price.
- Area and quantity basis
- Existing-material handling
- Excavation or base assumptions
- Restoration limits
Standardize preparation and method
Compare how cracks, potholes, failed zones, tie-ins and edges are addressed. Record whether the scope is patching, resurfacing, milling, reconstruction or a combination.
- Cleaning and preparation
- Localized repairs
- Transition treatment
- Edge confinement
Record exclusions and uncertainty
A responsible comparison keeps unknown base conditions, drainage changes, buried utilities, permits and access limitations visible. An allowance is not the same as a verified quantity.
- Unknown conditions
- Review or testing still required
- Access and working-hour limits
- Change-order process questions
Keep a yearly pavement ledger
After work, retain the final scope, completion date, drainage notes and closeout evidence. Inspect at a consistent time each year and after major events so change can be compared against the baseline.
- Same photo locations
- Crack and patch changes
- Drainage performance
- Edge and marking condition
The City describes condition management and inspection for municipal roads. It supports condition-led thinking, but it is not a private-driveway specification and does not imply municipal affiliation. City of Maple Ridge pavement-program context ↗
